What’s Love Got To Do With It?

love

On most spiritual paths, one tries to be loving, kind, and considerate. A Course in Miracles calls this the face of innocence–while all along the way what one really feels is lurking underneath. As Jesus describes in the Course:

A concept of the self is made by you. It bears no likeness to yourself at all. It is an idol, made to take the place of your reality as Son of God. The concept of the self the world would teach is not the thing that it appears to be. For it is made to serve two purposes, but one of which the mind can recognize. The first presents the face of innocence, the aspect acted on. It is this face that smiles and charms and even seems to love. It searches for companions and it looks, at times with pity, on the suffering, and sometimes offers solace. It believes that it is good within an evil world.

This aspect can grow angry, for the world is wicked and unable to provide the love and shelter innocence deserves. And so this face is often wet with tears at the injustices the world accords to those who would be generous and good. This aspect never makes the first attack. But every day a hundred little things make small assaults upon its innocence, provoking it to irritation, and at last to open insult and abuse.” (T-31.V.2,3)

This aspect is the mask that covers over a never-ending feeling of fear, whether it be fear that is in awareness and experienced as intense, or fear that has been pushed out of awareness and shows up a little here and a little there, always hovering in the background as some sort of anxiety or worry. In A Course in Miracles there are many beautiful teachings on how to get to the awareness of Love through the process of forgiveness, but Jesus states clearly that real love has been pushed out of awareness and that we are to focus on unlearning everything that covers over this awareness. In the introduction of the Course we read:

“The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance.”

And in the Manual for Teachers, Jesus goes on to say:

“You may have noticed that the list of attributes of God’s teachers does not include things that are the Son of God’s inheritance. Terms like love, sinlessness, perfection, knowledge and eternal truth do not appear in this context. They would be most inappropriate here. What God has given is so far beyond our curriculum that learning but disappears in its presence. Yet while its presence is obscured, the focus properly belongs on the curriculum.” (M-4.X.3)

Throughout the text Jesus teaches us that we have settled for an egoic thought system that has offered us pseudo-love, which is made up of neediness, self- concern, unworthiness, littleness, and a whole lot of other subterranean beliefs that keep us grasping towards something outside of us. Jesus is inviting us to put our mind energy into unlearning everything that covers the awareness of what is already ours–Love! It is us! Uncovering the blocks is the only way to bring true love back into awareness. It’s the only thing that can!

Let’s join hands and let go of our blocks!! We are worthy of deep and abiding peace. We are worthy of an experience that ends all doubt. We are worthy of the consistent experience that we are beautiful, pure, radiant love itself–and that there is nothing to grasp for or to seek in a lie. The Course is an invitation into a deep process of undoing and releasing our attachment to this painful thought system as we allow the dark thoughts of the ego to be faced and seen as false or forgiven. There is nothing more important to our awakening then to dedicate our minds to going through whatever is necessary to come into the awesome awareness of I am worthy of perfect happiness. I am worthy of deep and abiding peace. I am indeed worthy of true love that wells up from within and just wants to pour out, without any agenda for anything in return.

This is what the whole point of A Course in Miracles is: to bring us into the awareness that we have identified with a false idea of what we are. We are not spirit having a human experience. We are not here to learn and grow. We are here to wake up from a dream that keeps us in an experience of littleness and fear. A Course in Miracles is inviting us to a whole new reality. Jesus is calling us out of the world of littleness and fear. The invitation from Jesus is worthy of us turning our whole attention in its direction, no matter what it takes. So what’s love got to do with it? Love of this world has absolutely nothing to do with It! The true love of Christ has everything to do with it!!

In Love, Suzanne
